A school project with impact –
locally rooted, globally minded
Social engagement has always been a natural part of who we are at UWT. Through UWT cares, we support initiatives that not only provide short-term help but create long-term positive change. Projects that reflect the values shaping our daily collaboration: down-to-earth thinking, loyalty, appreciation and a family-like spirit of partnership.
In 2026 we are therefore supporting a special project in Rwanda initiated by Dr. Johannes Huber. The surgeon from Kempten is known to many simply as “Doc Hu” – someone who does not just observe challenges, but takes action.

Dr. Huber at the laying of the foundation stone
In a suburb of Rwanda’s capital Kigali, around 2,000 students attend school – including many children in inclusive classes. Education is a key foundation for the future. But learning also requires proper care and support.
This is where the project comes in: Since July 2025, a school kitchen and dining hall covering around 3,000 m² has been built. The construction involved around 90 local workers, demonstrating remarkable commitment and teamwork. The building was even completed earlier than planned by the end of 2025.
The new facility will become the heart of the school and ensure the reliable daily meals for all students. A project that clearly shows what can be achieved when local communities are actively involved – pragmatic, sustainable and built on strong foundations.
Energy for education –
sustainable and independent

Sustainable energy: The PV system creates independence and reduces costs in the long term
Dr. Huber is covering a large part of this investment himself – because he believes in the project and knows how much impact it can create.
UWT supports the initiative with a total donation of €10,000 – €5,000 from the company and an additional €5,000 personally contributed by UWT Managing Director Uwe Niekrawietz.
All donations reach the project 100%, as the Lions Club Förderverein acts as the intermediary organization. The official opening of the system is planned for spring 2026.
“High costs for wood and energy are a major challenge in this region. At the same time, the sun shines almost every day – not using this potential would be a missed opportunity. With the photovoltaic system, we are creating a sustainable and independent energy solution for the school,” explains Dr. Johannes Huber.
A photovoltaic system is therefore being installed on the roof of the school to supply the entire facility with electricity. Combined with a 57 kW night storage system, the installation will create an energy solution that ensures independence while reducing long-term operating costs.

Support that goes further:
assistance for a women’s shelter
The commitment does not stop with the school. The overall project also includes support for a women’s shelter in Musanze.
A daycare center has been equipped with furniture, and the medical care for around 200 women has been significantly improved. This was made possible through the purchase of medical equipment as well as the employment of a nurse, a doctor and two psychologists.
Respect and appreciation are shown through action – especially where help is urgently needed.
Why this project resonates with UWT
Dr. Johannes Huber has been volunteering in East Africa for many years. He treats children with malformations, injuries and burn wounds, regularly holds consultations in hospitals and understands the realities and personal stories of the people there firsthand.
The surgeon from nearby Kempten is not only the initiator of the project for us, but also a long-standing friend. Through shared connections – including the Allgäu Comets American football team, where UWT has been a main sponsor for many years – a close and trusting relationship has developed.
This personal connection, combined with his extraordinary social commitment, makes the project particularly meaningful to us. Supporting it through UWT cares is therefore a true matter of the heart.
To date, the dedicated doctor has raised €300,000 for social projects in Rwanda – not out of obligation, but out of conviction. With medical expertise and a truly compassionate heart.
