International Training – Internship in Malta

Our trainee Lenia gains valuable experience as an aspiring industrial clerk

As a trainee industrial clerk, I didn’t just want to acquire new technical knowledge — I wanted to broaden my perspective beyond the everyday working environment I knew in Germany. My internship abroad at Adpro, our second production site in Malta, offered exactly that opportunity. For two weeks, I was able to experience how international collaboration works, how different departments interact, and how rewarding it can be to take on responsibility in a new environment. At the same time, the island’s open culture and relaxed way of life opened the door to impressions that went far beyond the workplace.

In Germany, I had already gained insight into UWT’s organizational processes. I got to know the workflows in scheduling and supported the warehouse team with shipments to Malta. With this experience in mind, I was excited to see what awaited me at Adpro and which tasks I would take on there.

After traveling from Germany to Malta, I was warmly welcomed on my first day at work. During my two-week stay, I received an introduction to various departments. Among other things, I learned about their purchasing, administration, and production planning processes. It was fascinating to see how Adpro is structured and what is done differently compared to UWT. I especially enjoyed helping out in production and assembling different components myself. What I appreciated most was how friendly and open all my colleagues were. They were genuinely interested in my perspectives and suggestions, which led to many insightful and educational conversations that I truly benefited from.

After work, there was plenty of time to explore the island. Even in November, temperatures were around 23 °C, so we spent most afternoons going on different outings. I particularly loved visiting the Blue Lagoon with its crystal-clear turquoise water, and the Blue Grotto with its stunning view over the sea (see cover photo).

I also discovered cities such as Sliema, Valletta, and San Ġiljan, where shopping and delicious food could be perfectly combined. Besides the many impressive places, I found it especially interesting to learn more about the island from Jesmond, Adpro’s Managing Director, who shared a lot about its history and culture.

On the weekend, Jesmond and Therese (HR & Admin Executive) showed me Malta’s sister island, Gozo. We took the ferry and spent the day touring the island by car. They took me to beautiful spots, including a cave overlooking Red Beach and the “Wied il-Għasri Window.” We also visited the salt pans in Xwejni, which were fascinating. The small towns on Gozo were equally charming and impressive. For lunch, we stopped at a restaurant on the promenade in Xlendi.

After nearly two weeks full of new experiences, it was time to travel back to Germany. I’m incredibly grateful that I was given the opportunity to complete this internship abroad. My special thanks go to Therese (HR & Admin Executive), Jesmond (Managing Director), Aaron (Operations Leader), and Jonathan (Quality Officer), whose support, openness, and kindness made this experience so enriching and valuable for me.

Other highlights included:

• The view from the small town of Mgarr and the delicious food by the beach

• The openness and friendliness of the Maltese people

• A trip to the medieval city of Mdina with its wonderful views over the city walls

• Shopping at the market in Marsaxlokk

• Popeye Village

… and so much more

Why I recommend doing this internship abroad:

Overall, the internship was a fantastic experience. You become much more independent in your daily life, discover new ways of working, and naturally improve your English skills. Looking back, it was also rewarding to pass on my newly gained knowledge and support process optimization. I would recommend this opportunity to anyone — the combination of work, culture, and stunning beaches is truly unique.
