Production of polystyrene packaging – full detection in a process tank (polystyrene)

The Challenge

Our customer, produces building and insulation materials, for which it uses polyfoam and Styrofoam. Styrofoam is 98% air. Expanded polystyrene is a lightweight plastic foam insulation material produced from polystyrene. The customer asked us about a level switch or sensor for an expander. The solid beads are filled by a pneumatic system in the expander. Under the influence of high pressure and steam, the beads then blow up. The customer has to stop the process once all the beads have exploded. The customer tried different sensors, but the high humidity and pressure shortened the lifespan of the devices.

Our Solution

The best solution for the expander was our vibration rod Mononivo MN 4020. It is sensitive enough to stop the process once all the beads have exploded. It is hermetic on the inside of the process and can withstand pressure up to 16 bar. This sensor has been operating on the expander for many years without any malfunctions or breakdowns.
