Copper production - Level measurement in a crusher (raw ore).

The Challenge

In a copper mine in Chile, the level of raw ore stones needed to be monitored to ensure the proper operation of the primary crusher. The process is characterized by strong vibrations and the constant movement of material, which also generates a significant amount of dust. The crushing system features a 1-meter-wide area dedicated to continuous material monitoring and feed. For this demanding environment, a robust level measurement solution was required, capable of withstanding wear, vibrations, and dust, while providing reliable high- and low-level detection of the raw ore.

Our Solution

The optimal solution was the non-contact radar sensor NivoRadar 4100. This very compact unit was specifically designed for measurements in highly dusty conditions. Thanks to its 80 GHz technology and narrow 4° beam angle, it provides reliable measurement even in dusty environments and with low-dielectric materials. Its electronics are encapsulated in synthetic resin, ensuring trouble-free operation in environments with extreme vibrations. The accuracy of ±2 mm, combined with the possibility of linearization adjustments for the discharge cone, made this transmitter an ideal solution for the application.
